First aid stain treatment for your carpet

Maintaining the carpet at your office can be a nightmare. While you can hire us to keep your carpets clean and sanitary, there are a few first aid steps you can encourage your workers to do if anything spills. We do believe that regular carpet cleaning from our experts will prolong the life of your rugs and carpets, significantly longer than just vacuuming.

Take a prompt action to prevent staining. Depending on what spills, there are different solutions for each stains.
You will need some clean white absorbent cloth or tissue and the four basic solutions listed below. (Please check that your carpet is colourfast and safe to clean, by testing all solutions in an inconspicuous area before application).

Tackle stains as follow:

1. Coffee, tea or Liquid food

Dry the liquid excess using an absorbent cloth or tissue. Make a solution of one tablespoon white vinegar, one tablespoon liquid hand dishwashing detergent and two cups (473 milliliters) of warm water. Sponge any remaining stain alternately with a little rubbing alcohol and small amounts of warm water. Blot it dry after each time you wet it. Moisten the stained areas with three percent hydrogen peroxide. Let the hydrogen peroxide stand for about an hour. Blot and repeat as necessary. Pile a bunch of paper towels over the area when the stain is finally gone. Weigh down the paper towels with something heavy, like a stack of books. This will absorb all the moisture in about an hour.

2. Chocolate, Sweet, Cream, Ice-cream or Vomit

Scrub off any excess and use a dry cloth to  take any liquid starting from the outer edge. Mix one part of vinegar and one part of liquid hand dishwashing detergent and spread it around the affected area. Blot dry.  Make an Ammonia Solution - One teaspoonful of branded household ammonia (available from hardware stores) to one cup of warm water. Start tapping the areas with the Ammonia Solution then blot dry.

3. Fats, Oils, Ointment or Tar

Start by covering the stained area with baking soda/ corn starch. Sprinkle the powder liberally and don’t worry about using too much. Both baking soda or corn starch are absorbents that will “soak up” moisture, especially oil. Start rubbing the affected area to make sure the baking soda/ corn starch penetrates into the fibres. Leave it dry for about 15 minutes before you vacuum the excess baking soda/ corn starch. Squirt a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent onto the stained area and using a damp cloth, start rubbing the area to get the remaining oil. Blot dry and let it dry completely before walking all over the affected area.

Finally after doing the steps above, there are ways to help the liquid to completely dried up. Spread white kitchen towel (stacked 6-8 sheets deep) over the affected area and a place a weight, such as a book, directly on top. This will help the moisture residue to soak into the towels. We do recommend a carpet deep-cleaning at least once a year. Executive Building Maintenance performs complete Lower Mainland carpet cleaning that cleans every single fibre, right down to the padding. Our professionally trained team of cleaners use a combination of modern, high-efficiency machinery and traditional cleaning methods to give you the best clean possible.
